“The Transformation Through Technology programme puts patients’ safety at the forefront and means clinicians can securely access patient data in real time from any location, with a full picture of patient medical history. The changes mean that we can reduce excess length of stay, reduce unneeded variation in care, increase efficiency, help to avoid adverse events and enable better outcomes for our patients.” explains the Director of Informatics, Tracey Scotter.

The programme involved implementing a digital health record through three major IT systems: a clinical portal, an electronic document management system and an e-patient record.

The trust have created a landscape which will enable clinicians to access information or use services wherever they may be. Dan Oakes, Technical Architect at Sheffield Teaching Hospital confirms: “Right now there’s more demand to push care out of the hospital setting and into the community. Once our systems are digitised there will be demand from the community services to access the same record. From the foundations we are now laying, we will have many opportunities to do things differently and use our teams much more efficiently.”
