Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s business case to take Lorenzo has been approved by the CSC LSP Programme Board.
The trust was the second to confirm its intention to take the electronic patient record system from CSC under the interim agreement between the company and Department of Health, which gives trusts central funding for software and deployment costs.
Hull and East Yorkshire has worked with CSC for nearly two years to ensure that the Lorenzo functionality meets the trust’s needs and has gained official approval by the central board.
Phil Morley, the trust’s chief executive, said he was very supportive of the implementation.
“Lorenzo is a key plank of our transformational programme and getting approval from the trust board for the business case, and now receiving formal agreement from the Health and Social Care Information Centre to proceed with Lorenzo, is a positive step forward for the trust,” he said.
“Lorenzo will help us eliminate paper, facilitate agile working, support collaborative working and share information more effectively.”
Director of IT and Innovation Martyn Smith said Hull and East Yorkshire has worked hard on driving clinical engagement on the project and is confident of being able to go-live with the system in September 2014.
He added that the trust is working closely with Humber NHS Foundation Trust, which went live with Lorenzo in May last year, to create a single record.
“We are working with our neighbours, Humber NHS Trust, to build on their success with Lorenzo and together we aim to create a single unified record as soon as possible,” he said.
"We know that this is a hugely significant step for us and for the patients we treat. Of course there are risks, but those aren’t unique to Lorenzo.”
The September 2014 roll-out will cover the majority of the Lorenzo clinical modules, including electronic ordering, reporting and emergency care.
Hull and East Yorkshire is in the process of implementing an electronic whiteboard system from Cayder on its wards, self-service outpatient e-registration as well as e-triage and e-registration in A&E. These will all integrate with Lorenzo.
The trust also plans to implement an e-casenotes and e-observations system.
Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust and The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust have had their business cases approved by the board.
Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, which was the third ‘early adopter’ of Lorenzo, recently had its business case to deploy the advanced bed management functionality approved.
Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust and Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust have also confirmed their intention to take Lorenzo.
