Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have signed a deal with MSoft for its blood tracking systems.
The company’s web-based electronic blood tracking and bedside management technology will be installed at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and Torbay Hospital and then rolled out further over summer 2012.
The electronic blood tracking system tracks blood and controls access to and from blood fridges, while updating the trust’s pathology system.
The bedside management system allows each barcoded blood unit to be matched with a patient’s barcoded wristband, to help to make sure that the right blood reaches the right person.
It also ensures that only approved staff are able to access the blood and fully audits the transfusion process from start to finish.

MSoft has already installed the system at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust, United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and the Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust.
The company says it is also in discussion with a number of trusts to allow them to track the supply of blood to patients via Apple’s iPad.
