Modern clinical care means reviewing and understanding a diverse range of data from a diverse set of sources. In North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust that was sometimes proving challenging, thanks to a large number of discrete electronic solutions coupled with a significant continuing reliance on paper documentation.

To address the issue, staff at the organisation decided to introduce a clinical portal. Powered by InfoFlex, the portal enables staff to access data from a variety of digital systems in one place – and with one log in. And as more and more systems have been added to the portal view, including GP data, the setup has essentially become an electronic patient record for the trust.

Graham Putnam, CCIO and Caldicott Guardian at the trust – and a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon – says the solution has made a significant difference to clinical care.

“Accessing a range of information sources including the GP record in a contextual fashion using our InfoFlex clinical portal means that those key decisions are supported by the most up to date information presented through a simple interface, which displays it rapidly and correctly. It’s just a much better way of doing things. Being so customisable means that we can easily bring additional resources into the portal view, further enriching the electronic patient record.”
