Cheshire and Merseyside is home to a variety of hospitals – general and specialist – and so the people who also call the area home have often experienced a tricky patient journey. That was particularly the case when it came to radiology. Images had to be continually imported between hospitals and patients often arrived at clinic only to find their consultant had no access to their images. It made it impossible to make a decision on treatment and sometimes left another scan as the only option.

Radiologists, meanwhile, were left with uneven workloads. Busier departments had unsustainable levels of demand and trainee rotes were non-compliant with the European Working Time Directive. But it’s a situation staff say has now been addressed, thanks to the introduction of a regional radiology reporting hub.

Through the use of Carestream’s Vue Reporting and Enterprise Viewer modules, all images are now available to all radiologists on all sites. There are multiple local radiology archives plus a single virtual data centre, meaning each site retains control of its own data while also having access to all other images – as though there was a single physical system.

The result, staff say, is better care for patients and a better working environment for staff. To find out more, download the case study.
