An electronic patient record (EPR) is often portrayed as the solution that puts all necessary information at a clinician’s fingertips instantly. But if that information doesn’t include imaging, can it really be said to be a complete solution?

At University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, staff decided the answer to that question was no. It means that when the organisation drew up a business case to replace its PACS, a vendor neutral archive and an enterprise imaging solution were included in the plans.

And it means that today, imaging is completely integrated with the electronic patient record. Users can make electronic requests direct from the EPR into the PACS system – provided by Sectra – and clinicians have all information, including imaging, immediately at hand.

The setup has also made it possible to support multi-disciplinary team meetings in which members are working from different sites, as well as increased home working for radiologists.

The intention now is to replicate the approach for other types of images, further enhancing the enterprise imaging approach.
