There has never been more clinical information collected about the delivery of healthcare or indeed about individual patients’ conditions. Increasingly, the task of a clinical professional is to analyse all of that data and make the correct decision – but doing so is far from easy.

At The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospitals NHS Trust, it’s one that’s been made simpler through the introduction of clinical decision support. The trust has used UpToDate since 2017. The tool enables clinical users to quickly search for information on any clinical area, all of it written by expert authors based on the latest medical literature.

Initially the resource was made available on the intranet. But when the trust introduced an electronic patient record system, leaders made the decision to embed access to UpToDate within it. The result has been a significant increase in usage and, it is believed, better clinical decisions – between June 2018 and June 2019, an estimated 7,348 projected decisions were changed and another 16,120 reinforced.
