Join Professor Sarah Joy Aitken in discussion with Katie MacLure (BCS Health & Care Scotland) for our live BCS BMJ HCI Journal Club hosted by Digital Health.

Synopsis

This journal club is based on a paper entitled, Codesign of health technology interventions to support best-practice perioperative care and surgical waitlist management (by Sarah Joy Aitken, Sophie James, Amy Lawrence, Anthony Glover, Henry Pleass, Janani Thillianadesan, Sue Monaro, Kerry Hitos and Vasi Naganathan). At a time when waiting lists are at record levels and resources stretched, this project aimed to ‘determine where health technology can support best-practice perioperative care for patients waiting for surgery.’

Using a participatory methodology based on the UK Design Council ‘Double Diamond’, the authors engaged perioperative clinicians and patients from four health districts in Sydney, Australia in three co-design workshops. Fifty-one participants went through the Discover, Define and Develop phases using personas and user journeys to identify six key health technology opportunities, leaving the Delivery and evaluation phase for future research.
