Connectivity between IT systems is fundamental in the modern healthcare landscape, as a Global Digital Exemplar and named by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) as one of the world’s ‘most wired’ hospitals, Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust prides itself on ensuring its clinical and nursing staff have access to digital tools and information that help free up time and improve care.

In line with national policy, Wirral wanted to exchange and capture data from medical devices in its ICU unit, and send to the trusts EPR. This required the integration of two disparate systems, although a challenging task, Wirral soon recognised the strategic benefits of adopting a flexible interoperability solution. One key task within this journey was to ensure the new system could also connect with other devices in the future, both within the organisation and across the regional Integrated Care System (ICS).

A technical proof of concept was set up to demonstrate how the integration would work, and was validated in just one day. There were also developments during the project which saw further enhancements made to improve clinical usability, reflecting the trusts focus of placing clinicians at the heart of its digital strategy.
