Why you should get your applications for the AWS’ UK healthcare accelerator programme before the deadline

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the healthcare system in the UK saw an increased adoption of digitally-enabled, secure, and compliant healthcare solutions to meet the country’s rapidly changing health needs. During the global crisis, embracing digital health solutions enabled the NHS to deliver a world-leading vaccination programme, highlighting the importance of implementing modern solutions to solve the healthcare industry’s most pressing issues.

Now, as the country’s healthcare providers begin to shift focus, the NHS is tasked with tackling backlogs in elective care, continuing to implement the NHS Long Term Plan, and focusing on the transformation of services to support NHS resilience, all the while optimising volumes of healthcare data to improve patient outcomes and operational processes.

In support of high-potential healthcare startups developing next-generation solutions that will help address these issues and underpin the continued success of the UK Healthcare system, AWS has launched a healthcare accelerator programme in the UK, and is accepting applications until December 5th.

The virtual four-week technical, business, and mentorship programme is aimed at UK-based healthcare startups or international startups with existing UK-based operations that are targeting healthcare issues such as citizen access, elective care recovery, population health and precision medicine, and workforce development.

The AWS Healthcare Accelerator is designed to cultivate and promote a diverse cohort of startups across the healthcare industry that seek to achieve improved patient and clinician experience, better health outcomes, and lower cost of care.

Throughout the curriculum, selected startups will receive AWS promotional credits, specialised AWS training, mentoring from healthcare domain and technical subject matter experts, business development, go-to-market and investment guidance, and potential proof-of-concept opportunities with public sector healthcare customers.

The programme will bring in healthcare industry leaders to collaborate with startups on topics ranging from defining business models, regulatory pathways, clinical validation, electronic health record integration, and more. There will also be collaboration opportunities with AWS customers and members of the AWS Partner Network which are looking for innovative healthcare solutions.

PUBLIC, a leading government technology company, will help to identify the first UK-based cohort of the AWS Healthcare Accelerator. PUBLIC brings extensive experience in managing accelerator programmes as well as a strong network of healthcare startups. PUBLIC will first tap 20 applicants to pitch for participation in the programme before recommending the top 10 finalists to join the UK AWS Healthcare Accelerator.

The AWS Healthcare Accelerator was originally launched in the US, receiving over 420 applications from 31 countries. As of September, the US programme has identified 10 startups to form its first cohort with projects ranging from voice-powered care assistants to remote care delivery using artificial intelligence licensed from NASA.

Applications to the UK AWS Healthcare Accelerator will be judged on several factors, including the innovative and unique nature of the project, the overall value the solution will bring to the healthcare industry, the creative application of AWS to solve problems, and the team’s ability to deliver on an identified opportunity.

Applications for the AWS Healthcare Accelerator programme are open to startups until December 5th.
