The latest Digital Health Unplugged is now live – this time with a new look format.

Host Andrea Downey chats one-on-one with Liz O’Riordan, consultant breast surgeon and award-winning co-author of ‘The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Control’.

O’Riordan, who was a keynote speaker at Virtual Summer School 2021, speaks about her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2015 and her experience of the health system from a patient’s perspective.

Despite her work as a breast cancer surgeon, O’Riordan said her experience in the consulting room hadn’t prepared her for the experience of being a patient, adding that technology provided access to information when she needed it the most.

But she adds more could be done to empower patients and support them with digital services, including access to, and control over, their own medical data.

O’Riordan said the “empowered patient is here to stay” which will change the doctor-patient relationship for the better.

“We need to help every patient get access to digital health and digital literacy, and we need to learn ourselves what our patients need so we can help them better,” she said.
