Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust has gone live with an ophthalmology electronic patient record (EPR) system from Medisoft.

The deployment supports the move from paper-based processes to a fully digital clinical environment, with the aim of enhancing the way clinical data is captured, managed and shared across the organisation.

Royal Surrey will share its mediSIGHT EPR system with Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, creating a shared ophthalmology platform that enables joined-up care across both organisations.

Emily Shao, consultant ophthalmologist (specialty lead) at Royal Surrey, said: “Moving from paper to a fully digital imaging workflow has been a significant step forward for our teams.

“mediSIGHT has provided a reliable and intuitive platform that integrates seamlessly with our clinical processes.

“Clinicians can now access images more quickly and easily, which supports better-informed decision-making and improves the overall patient experience.

“Importantly, the shared instance with Ashford and St Peter’s enables closer collaboration between organisations.

“It gives us the potential to share resources while maintaining a consistent approach to clinical management.”

The EPR went live on 3 March, starting with the medical retina module, then all other mediSIGHT modules on the week of 16 March. This included floorwalking trainers to support and train the staff.

This collaborative model with Ashford and St Peter’s allows clinicians and commissioners to access key data at all relevant locations, supporting continuity of care for patients and enabling the delivery of standardised clinical workflows.

It also opens opportunities for greater efficiency through resource sharing and alignment of clinical practices, while maintaining robust controls around data access and patient confidentiality.

The rollout was delivered through collaboration between Medisoft, clinical stakeholders, and transformation and digital teams across both trusts.

Nick Dodds co-managing director at Medisoft, said: “This partnership approach ensured that the solution was configured to meet the specific needs of users while minimising disruption during the implementation project.

“This milestone underscores Medisoft’s ongoing commitment to supporting NHS organisations in modernising clinical workflows and improving frontline productivity by embracing digital innovation.

“By supplying secure, scalable, and collaborative medical record solutions, Medisoft continues to help healthcare providers improve efficiency, strengthen clinical decision-making, and deliver high-quality patient care.”

The installation means that fewer than five NHS trusts in England remain using predominantly paper-based processes in ophthalmology.
