The largest prison in the UK, HMP Wandsworth, has deployed TPP’s SystmOne Prison. The roll-out of the system to every prison in England is now due to be completed by the end of January 2011.

TPP said HMP Wandsworth was one of the final few prisons in London to make the move to SystmOne. Complete coverage in the capital is also scheduled for the end of January.

A spokesperson for TPP told EHI Primary Care that more than 100 prison sites in England were now live on SystmOne, with the remaining 20 prisons scheduled to deploy the software within the next three months.

TPP’s SystmOne Prison was selected by the Department of Health as the national clinical IT system for prisons in June last year and primary care trusts were given until December this year to deploy it.

TPP said HMP Wandsworth has more than 1,600 male prisoners spread over eight wings. It has deployed SystmOne Prison in its healthcare centre, which includes rehabilitation and detoxification units plus 24 hour nursing care and an inpatient ward.

Felix Taylor from HMP Wandsworth said: “We were very happy with how the deployment went; we had absolutely no problems.

"We’re currently in the process of training all the relevant staff and are hoping to be using the system to its full capacity in just a few weeks.”

TPP said SystmOne’s capability to share data between prisons and its patient-tracking facilities were proving especially valuable.

Dan Midgely, customer relations manager from TPP, said: “SystmOne has been the prison system of choice for a long time but it’s really exciting that we’ve now been able to deploy to the largest prison in the UK.

“We’re hoping that over the next few months every prison in the country will be using SystmOne for their health centres and then we’ll know we’re making life easier for every single prison healthcare professional.”
