  • Airedale NHS Foundation Trust has rolled out the Careology app to provide cancer patients with support and help them manage their condition
  • The app was funded by a winning bid to the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance as part of its innovation competition across the region
  • Roll out commenced on 3 February 2025, with every new and current patient at the hospital receiving cancer care eligible to download the app

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust has rolled out the Careology app to support patients being treated for cancer.Ā

Careology works with healthcare teams to help self-manage aspects of their treatment, including medication, side effects and symptoms.

The app launched at the trust in February 2025 for new and current patients, following a winning bid to the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance as part of its innovation competition across the region.

Caroline Salt, lead cancer nurse at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said: ā€œThis is a fantastic opportunity for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust cancer teams to continue their approach in delivering personalised care for our patients.

ā€œWe are working hard to provide care closer to home, promoting digital innovation and ensuring patients feel informed, supported and empowered in their treatment journey, at a time when they can feel very vulnerable.

ā€œDue to the vast geographical area we cover, coming into hospital can be challenging, but having the confidence in a clinically validated app will help to reassure those who may need it.ā€

Patient-reported data will be available for Airedale cancer teams to see how patients are managing their treatment and enable them to intervene early should someone need acute care.

Careology also provides patients with relevant guidance and advice on how to manage symptoms and side effects, reminders of appointments and when to take medications.

Patientts’ family and friends can see how they are doing through their own Caregiver app which provides tools to support cancer patients such as recipes.

Paul Landau, founder and chief executive of Careology, said: ā€œWe are thrilled to be working with Airedale to address some of the challenges that cancer care is facing across the UK and beyond.

ā€œAs incidence rates of cancer rise, Careologyā€™s technology is uniquely placed to enable more efficient care.

ā€œBy giving oversight of how patients are outside of their appointments, those who need in-person or urgent care can be triaged effectively.

“Not only does this improve individualsā€™ experience of treatment but also improves efficiency and services at a higher level.ā€

In September 2024, Careology and the Ella Dawson foundation partnered to offer tailored support to young people with cancer, launched in partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

The app is now available to those living with cancer aged 18 to 30 to view personalised content from the foundation to improve their wellbeing.
