❓Did you know?

According to research from IP specialists Marks & Clerk, the global 3D printing industry is evolving faster than anticipated, with its market value now projected to reach $57.1 billion by 2028.

The forecast significantly exceeds earlier long-term projections, a leap attributed to both growing demand and the development of a more supportive legal framework.

Recent regulatory changes in the UK and European Union are highlighted as a key driver of this accelerated growth. Notably, as of 1 May 2025, the EU’s registered design system was updated to provide explicit protection for non-physical designs, such as 3D print files. This reform gives rights holders the ability to legally block the unauthorised copying and sharing of these digital design files.

Additionally, the European Patent Office has been allowing patent protection for additive manufacturing software since July 2022, closing what was considered a significant gap in IP coverage.

These legal advancements are described as making the sector more navigable and secure for businesses.

Susan Bradley, a partner at Marks & Clerk, said that 3D printing is “no longer a future-facing technology,” and the new regulatory framework offers practical tools for competitiveness and investor confidence.
