It’s time for ambient voice technology to move from transcription to transformation, writes Dr Constantin Jabarin, chief clinical information officer at Altera Digital Health (UK & EMEA)

I’ve spent years working alongside my NHS clinical colleagues and operational leaders, and one theme is constant: documentation takes too much time and focus away from the patient.

Clinicians often end up spending significant time writing notes, chasing documentation and time in front of a screen, with real impacts on burnout and job satisfaction. We can, and should, design technology that gives us that time back.

That belief is exactly why we built Sunrise Thread AI, delivering native capability within the Sunrise electronic patient record (EPR) platform.

Ambient voice technology (AVT) only delivers its full value when it’s woven directly into the workflows, governance and data structures clinicians already rely on.

When AVT lives inside the EPR, clinicians stay focused on care, not clicks

Bolt-on tools can transcribe conversations, but they struggle to translate that into integrated, safe, structured, actionable information at scale. Embedding AVT inside the EPR changes the game.

When AVT lives inside the EPR, clinicians stay focused on care, not clicks.

Sunrise Thread AI captures, transcribes and interprets the encounter in real time, on desktop or mobile, inside the same workflow they already know.

After each interaction, clinicians review and can edit the autogenerated note on a single screen. That reduces cognitive load, cuts the admin pressure, and helps reduce time focused on documentation that often drives dissatisfaction and burnout.

Ambient tools are only as valuable as the data they create. Sunrise Thread AI generates structured notes that align to NHS documentation standards and native Sunrise data models, improving accuracy, auditability and downstream use.

Impact across all pathways

The results are fewer errors, better handovers and stronger compliance with information governance. Conversation governance tools and full auditability give clinicians control and give our organisations confidence.

Operationally, embedding AVT within the EPR eliminates parallel systems and fragmented records so trusts can see the impact across all pathways, from clinics to wards to virtual care.

Structured outputs feed analytics and quality improvement without extra effort, supporting initiatives to improve productivity and flow at a time when we all find ourselves under increased pressure.

Adoption also accelerates because Sunrise Thread AI feels familiar: native controls, native review, native signoff. With minimal training required, trusts can unlock value quickly and reliably across specialties, sites and ICSs.

Every time we document something in a separate tool, we must sacrifice valuable time to reconcile the content

Sunrise Thread AI was built for the NHS to support delivery of the 10 year health plan: reducing admin, improving productivity and restoring the human connection in care.

Every time we document something in a separate tool, we must sacrifice valuable time to reconcile the content.

Native AVT removes duplication and lowers the risk of mismatched notes, missing fields or unsearchable text. The structured interpretation lands exactly where it needs to go in Sunrise, ready for clinical use, reporting and continuity of care.

Sunrise Thread AI records clinician patient conversations in real time and automatically generates a structured interpretation of the visit directly in Sunrise.

Clinicians retain full control to review and edit within native workflows. Conversation governance tools support accuracy and clarity with complete auditability.

The result: more accurate data to support care delivery and clinical coding and more time with patients.

If you’re ready to move from transcription to transformation, the EPR is where ambient voice technology belongs.
