System C completes BadgerNet maternity rollout in Wales

System C has completed the rollout of its BadgerNet maternity platform across all seven NHS health boards in Wales, creating a single national digital maternity record and patient-facing app.

The implementation, first announced in early 2025, means around 26,000 babies born in Wales each year will now be supported through one maternity information system, replacing local systems and removing the need for paper hand-held maternity notes.

BadgerNet went live across the seven health boards in Wales between July 2025 and April 2026.

Under the three-year national agreement, expectant parents can access maternity records, appointments and updates through one digital app, regardless of where they receive care in Wales.

Clinicians are also able to securely access patient information across organisational boundaries at the point of care.

The move is intended to improve continuity of care and reduce the administrative burden on both families and healthcare staff.

Anthony Tracey, director of digital at Hywel Dda University Health Board, the final Welsh health board to go live with BadgerNet, said: “The rollout of BadgerNet across Wales is a vitally important step forward in modernising our maternity services and providing a consistent service across the country.

“By giving expectant parents direct access to their information and enabling clinicians to share data more effectively, we are strengthening safety, transparency and consistency in maternity care nationwide.”

For parents, the digital record aims to simplify interactions with maternity services by removing the need to carry paper notes or repeatedly provide the same information at appointments.

The app gives expectant parents direct access to key details about their pregnancy and care, supporting more informed conversations and shared decision-making with clinicians.

For clinicians and health boards, the system is designed to streamline handovers between teams and sites by allowing information to be digitally recorded once and securely shared wherever needed.

The national rollout also creates a single dataset for maternity services across Wales, which could support service planning, benchmarking and population-level analysis.

By linking standardised maternity data across the country, health boards will be able to identify trends and variations in care more easily, supporting earlier interventions and evidence-based policy decisions.
