NHS England has awarded a contract worth £37.5 million to technology consultancy firm BJSS Limited.

A contract award notice published on 22 January 2025 states that BJSS will deliver “large-scale public facing digital services to support development for NHS.UK and the wider portfolio which includes the NHS App and Login”.

IBM continues to be NHS England’s delivery partner for the NHS App, under contract until July 2026.

BJSS announced on 29 January 2025, that it has been acquired by independent IT and business consulting services firm CGI as part of its UK-wide expansion to strengthen the firm’s presence across key commercial industry sectors and the public sector. The transaction is expected to close in February 2025.

The NHS App contract was awarded to BJSS on 24 December 2024, with the deal officially commencing on 1 January 2025 and ending on 31 December 2027.

A spokesperson for NHS England told Digital Health News: “Technology will play a key role in the new 10 year health plan.

“This contract is part of our plans to use technology to transform the NHS and give patients more control over how they manage their healthcare.”

As part of the government’s elective reform plan, published on 6 January 2025, it promised major upgrades to the NHS App to enable patients to choose providers, book appointments in more settings and receive test results, in a bid to help reduce waiting times to 18 weeks by March 2029.

The government pledged that by March 2025, patients at more than 85% of acute trusts will be able to view appointment information via the app, with proxy access for parents and carers to be available by March 2027.

Amanda Pritchard, chief executive of NHS England, said that the elective reform plan will “fully harness the potential of the NHS App, giving patients more information, choice and control over their care”.

BJSS worked on the NHS App during the Covid-19 pandemic, to allow video consultations from within the app with eConsult. It has also been improving the NHS Login process.

Glynn Robinson, chairman at BJSS, said: “Joining CGI represents an exciting new chapter for BJSS.

“Both CGI and BJSS share a commitment to sustainability, employee engagement and long-term client relationships.

“Together, we can leverage our complementary strengths to deliver even greater value for our clients while creating new opportunities for our talented team.”

BJSS was one of the suppliers named on the latest version of the Crown Commercial Services’ Digital Capability for Health Framework, which came into effect on 12 November 2024.

This story was amended at 17.05 on 31 January 2025 to clarify that IBM is the delivery partner for the NHS App.
