Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust has awarded a patient engagement portal contract worth £572,000 to DrDoctor.
The deployment of the DrDoctor platform, which is currently in the early delivery stage with no go-live date set, will enable automated appointment confirmations and reminders via SMS, email and the NHS App, and instant access to digital letters through secure patient portals and app integration.
It will also allow NHS App connectivity to enable push notifications and appointment management in existing patient tools.
Dr Remy McConvey, chief clinical information officer at Greater Manchester, said: “Mental health services need to be just as accessible as physical healthcare.
“For a long time, our service users have faced fragmented communication and complicated processes. This partnership is about fixing that.
“With DrDoctor, we’re modernising how people engage with us: making it easier to stay informed, attend appointments, complete forms and questionnaires, and feel supported throughout their care.”
The trust hopes to use DrDoctor’s solution to introduce a hybrid model of care that fuses digital tools with in-person services to improve communication with patients, reduce missed appointments, and support patients across their care journey.
Awarded via the G-Cloud Framework, the contract was signed on 10 May 2025 and started on 31 May 2025. It will last for two years, with an optional 12-month extension.
The trust will benefit from additional tools including digital forms and patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), integration with Civica Paris for structured data capture, and support services to ensure smooth technical onboarding and adoption.
Nick Barlow, transformation director at DrDoctor, said: “More than 1.2 million people are currently waiting for mental health support in England – a figure not currently accounted for in the 7.4 million strong NHS backlog.
“The last thing patients need is a system that makes it harder to engage when they finally get to the front of the queue.
“At DrDoctor, we design our tools to support real people with real challenges – reducing friction, freeing up clinical time, and ensuring every patient feels seen and supported.
“Greater Manchester is setting the bar for what modern, compassionate mental health services should look like.”
DrDoctor made its first foray into the mental health and community support space with the acquisition of personal health record platform Maia in August 2024.
Maia is a patient engagement and care planning app that allows patients to view, book, amend and cancel their appointments, complete questionnaires, access their care plans, view clinical documents and access their health information.
Following its acquisition from digital health company Mindwave Ventures, Maia is being integrated into DrDoctor’s patient engagement platform, which is used across more than 70 NHS trusts and health boards in England including Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
