Northampton General Hospital (NGH) NHS Trust has announced the go live date for its Nervecentre electronic patient record (EPR) system.

The EPR is planned to launch on 28 June 2025, bringing together patients’ medical records into a single digital format.

NGH selected Nervecentre as its preferred supplier in December 2023 before signing a 10-year contract in July 2024 to implement the EPR system.

William Monaghan, group chief digital information officer at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire and University Hospitals of Leicester, said: “This is a pivotal moment for NGH and our patients.

“The new EPR system puts essential information at our clinical teams’ fingertips, helping them deliver safer, more coordinated care.

“I’m incredibly proud of how our colleagues have embraced this change – they’ve worked tirelessly to prepare for this transition.

“While there may be a few teething problems as we go live, this investment in digital infrastructure will transform how we work, giving our teams more time to focus on what matters most: caring for patients.”

The EPR system will replace the trust’s mix of paper records and digital systems with  a central platform.

It is hoped to enable staff to view the latest medical information instantly, spend less time on administration and more time with patients, avoid asking patients to repeat their history multiple times, improve coordination between departments and services, and keep patient information secure.

The technology is also intended to help improve patient safety by highlighting clinical alerts, such as allergies, and providing a clear, audible record of care.

Although the EPR is only being introduced for use within NGH, it complements the Northamptonshire Care Record, a wider initiative that allows health and care professionals across the county to view shared health information, including from GP practices.

Training for staff is underway to support a smooth transition, with the hospital working closely with teams across the organisation to make sure the EPR system is embedded safely and effectively.

Paul Volkaerts, chief executive at Nervecentre, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Northampton General Hospital on this transformative journey.

“Deploying our cloud-native EPR is a significant step in enhancing patient care and streamlining workflows.

“We are confident it will deliver substantial benefits to both the hospital and the community it serves.”

Meanwhile, in May 2025, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust announced that it has signed a 10-year contract with Nervecentre to implement its cloud-native EPR system. Roll out is planned to start with the initiation phase in May 2025 and will take two years to complete.
