Cheshire-based Medisec Software has been acquired by technology and service company Clanwilliam Group for an undisclosed sum.

In the past 14 months, Clanwilliam Group has invested £9.5 million in tech companies serving the NHS, with more than £90 million in available funds to spend on acquisitions and investments in healthcare tech.

Medisec Software marks the 13th healthcare technology the company has acquired in three years – strengthening the group’s range of clinical software and services it now offers to the NHS.

Other companies in the group include Bluespier, which provides trusts with theatre management systems and clinical software, and Maxwell Stanley Consulting, a specialist consultancy firm that helps NHS organisations enhance patient information.

Clanwilliam Group said it only selects companies that can demonstrate that they are already driving innovation in the healthcare industry and which, with the right support, have the potential to transform the healthcare landscape even further.

Howard Beggs, Clanwilliam’s chief exective officer, said Medisec Software is an instant fit, providing cleverly integrated technologies with a long-term commitment to helping NHS organisations through their digital transformation.

Medisec Software has been working with NHS organisations for 25 years to digitise clinical correspondence and dictation.

About 15,000 primary and secondary healthcare professionals in England currently rely on the company’s products to generate more than five million documents every year.

The firm’s clients include the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

“Clanwilliam Group’s growth strategy across the UK is to actively develop a group of highly synergistic healthcare technology and services businesses”, Beggs said.

“We back leadership, and select companies who are already driving innovation in the healthcare industry and which, with the right support, have the potential to transform the healthcare landscape even further.”

Clanwilliam said its companies are helping reduce the deficit in NHS trusts by about £14 million annually.

According to the Kinds Fund latest figures for 2016/17, 51% of all trusts (approximately 240) are planning to end the year in deficit. Nearly three-quarters of these trusts are acute hospitals.

In December 2016, NHS Improvement forecast that NHS trusts would end 2016/17 with a potential deficit of £750 to £850 million.

The aim of the Dublin-based company, Clanwilliam,  is to deliver connected healthcare technology and services to improve the provision of healthcare services in the UK.
