Global healthcare provider UPMC Ireland has confirmed it will implement the MEDITECH Expanse electronic patient record (EPR).

Expanse was selected to deliver a single, shared intelligence platform across UPMC Ireland’s four hospitals, two cancer centres and six sports medicine clinics, featuring clinical, administrative and financial solutions.

The 10-year contract with MEDITECH was signed in April 2025 and the implementation project will begin in summer 2025, with the EPR go live expected by the end of 2026.

Eamonn Fitzgerald, managing director at UPMC Ireland, said: ā€œThis represents a transformational step forward in how we deliver care for both our patients and our people.

ā€œBy connecting every part of the patient journey through a single, secure electronic health record, we are creating a system that is safer, faster, and more efficient.

ā€œThis investment ensures that our clinicians and staff have access to the tools and information they need to deliver access to care to communities across the island of Ireland.

“This is another step in delivering life-changing medicine together.ā€

Expanse will support patient engagement with the introduction of a patient portal that provides access to health information, appointment details, secure messaging with providers, and questionnaires.

UPMC believes the implementation of the Expanse web-native and cloud-based technology is a fundamental step toward achieving future growth, innovation and collaboration across its hospitals, cancer centres and clinics.

Expanse also includes built-in safeguards to protect against cyberthreats, keep data and patient privacy secure, and ensure GDPR compliance.

Charlotte Scott, managing director at MEDITECH Ireland, said: ā€œWe are thrilled to partner with UPMC to implement Expanse and support them in their mission to always put the patient first.

ā€œThis is a game-changer for the organisation and the patients it cares for. The EHR will enable more connected and better care today while also positioning UPMC for future growth and innovation.ā€

Meanwhile, in December 2024, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust announced that it will implement MEDITECH’s Expanse EPR in its 20 locations around London.

The programme, which is expected to go live in spring 2026, will integrate Moorfields’ existing ophthalmology clinical noting system, OpenEyes, with the Expanse platform to establish one all-inclusive EPR across its network, with Expanse as the foundation.

Expanse will create one integrated EPR that delivers the same real-time access and view of patient health data at all of Moorfields’ locations, with departments such as A&E, radiology, pathology and pharmacy being fully digitised for the first time.
