Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has signed a contract with System C to implement AI-scribing through its electronic patient record (EPR).

The trust is the first of a cohort of customers to deploy ambient voice technology (AVT) within outpatient service using System C’s CareFlow EPR.

AVT will be used to capture and transcribe conversations between clinicians and patients through the EPR’s ambient AI outpatient consultations module, which will go live at Buckinghamshire Healthcare in summer 2026.

Duncan Dewhurst, chief digital and transformation officer at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “Signing this contract for System C’s Ambient AI solution represents a significant step forward for our outpatient services.

“We expect this technology to reduce administrative pressure on our clinicians, enabling clearer and faster communication with patients after their appointments.

“This solution will help us deliver safer, more efficient care while giving our teams more time to focus on what matters most – our patients.”

The EPR integration enables real-time clinical coding, actioning within the EPR such as order communications and pathway initiation, and context enrichment by drawing on relevant patient information like medical history and recent test results.

It also automatically generates clinic letters and completes outcome forms that drive billing and follow-up actions.

Expected benefits at Buckinghamshire include reduced clinician time and cognitive load, faster clinic letter turnaround, reduced administrative burden, improved coding accuracy and stronger protection against revenue loss from missed or delayed outcoming.

Guy Lucchi, managing director of healthcare at System C, said: “Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is leading the way in demonstrating what ambient AI can deliver when it is deeply embedded into the EPR.

“This isn’t just about transcription – it’s about transforming the entire outpatient workflow. By removing administrative burden, improving documentation quality, and supporting clinicians in real time, we’re helping the NHS unlock capacity and improve patient experience.

“We’re incredibly proud to be working with Buckinghamshire as they become our first trust to deploy this technology at scale.”

Earlier this month, NHS England published guidance on the use of AI-powered ambient scribing tools in health and care settings, setting out how organisations can safely adopt the technology while meeting data protection and patient rights requirements.

In January, NHSE published a national self-certified registry for AVT suppliers to show evidence of compliance with standards on clinical safety, technology, and data protection.

System C is not currently on the register because it needs to be live with a customer to qualify to prove evidence of adoption and value.

….so Bucks is the first customer for this AI ‘ambiently listening in on all patient-clinician encounters?

    Do patients consent to this?

Who is checking the accuracy of the clinical coding, pathway initiation, results checking etc?
