September is sepsis awareness month; 30 days in which the Sepsis Alliance sets out to raise awareness of one of the biggest killers in the UK and how it can be tackled.

As this white paper explains, sepsis can be treated relatively easily – the difficulty is spotting a complex condition, and here technology can help.

Cerner’s St.John Sepsis Agent, part of its electronic medical record system, helps clinicians to quickly and accurately identify those with the condition.

Its development was driven by company chairman Neal Patterson, after his sister-in-law died of sepsis, and it is constantly updated as new research and advice comes out.

The St. John Sepsis Agent is being used by trusts in the UK, including Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. As the white paper explains, the trust has worked with Cerner to tailor the solution to its needs, and now uses flags to help screen for potential sepsis patients.
