NHS Choices and UK online pilot extended

  • 3 April 2009

The partnership between NHS Choices and UK online centres is being extended to cover Directgov after proving to be a successful way of reaching people who do not access the internet.

The partnership between NHS Choices and UK online centres was created last April to increase awareness of the information available on the internet.

More than 300 online centres formed a network of NHS Choices Community Champions led by a flagship centre in each region.

The centres support people without internet access helping them to get to grips with computers and the NHS site. The partnership has supported almost 50,000 people to use the Choices site for anything from finding a GP to obtaining important medical advice.

People that go to the centres are shown how to use the internet by using NHS Choices as an example of an interactive website.

The partnership has been so successful in getting people to use the site that it has now been extended to include Directgov, the government’s flagship digital service.

The project will see customers in the nine flagship NHS centres being offered one to one support or group sessions on how to use the service.

Helen Milner, managing director for UK online centres said: “There is evidently a real appetite for public information from the web-wary, and I hope that by continuing to work closely with NHS Choices and Directgov we can make transformational government transform public services for even more people.”
