System C has acquired Scottish maternity and neonatal specialist Clevermed, adding to its EPR clinical software line-up.

This acquisition will broaden System C’s clinical product portfolio, enhancing the company’s maternity offering with a product already used to record nearly half of UK pregnancies.

Clevermed is best known for its BadgerNet maternity system, an end-to-end service supporting all aspects of electronic recording for women and children’s health, spanning maternity and neonatal records for women and children.

The system can run as a stand-alone maternity platform, and has also been integrated with EPRs including Cerner and co-headline sponsor of Digital Health Rewired 2023, System C. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

BadgerNet is used by nearly every neonatal unit in the UK, as well as many maternity units. By the end of 2023 it is estimated that 45% of UK pregnancies will be recorded on BadgerNet.

System C CEO, Nick Wilson, commented: “Clevermed leads the market in maternity and neonatal solutions and has a long track record of collaboration with clinicians across the NHS.”

Speaking to Digital Health News Wilson said: “BadgerNet is used by a large number of trusts, it creates a single pregnancy record wherever a mother presents. It completes and widens our clinical offerings in this space.”

He added: “From an organisation perspective we will be integrating Clevermed into System C, while retaining the BadgerNet and Clevernet branding.”

Wilson said no significant job losses were planned at Clevermed, with its Edinburgh office also retained.

Asked about the existing System C maternity solution Wilson said the plan will be to migrate customers to BadgerNet: “We will be discussing with existing customers over the coming weeks. It is a journey we will want to go on with customers.”

Jane Stephenson, CEO of Clevermed said: “System C is a great cultural and technological fit for us. This is an eagerly awaited next chapter for Clevermed, which is all about providing a fantastic platform for continued and exciting innovations in women and children’s health going forward.”

Clevermed also offers a Personal Health Record (PHR) product that System C may offer more widely,. “I think the Badgernotes PHR might be something we could offer to all our clients.  It can be powered from the back-end of BadgerNet but can be offered as a full PHR,” said Wilson.

Along with clinical access, every day the system supports over 40,000 women and families across the UK who log in for a view of their notes and/or their baby’s neonatal journey online through the Badger Notes phone app.

As well as working with English NHS trusts and Scottish Health Boards Clevermed has a presence in the New Zealand health market.
