Guernsey progresses InterSystems EHSCR

  • 11 November 2009

InterSystems has announced that Guernsey Health and Social Services Department has gone-live with key elements of its island-wide Electronic Health and Social Care Record (EHSCR).

Guernsey has replaced its thirteen year old patient administration system, SWIFT, with InterSystems’ TrakCare, while simultaneously implementing new Accident and Emergency and theatre software and specialist child health software from CSE Healthcare Systems.

The software has been integrated and interfaced with TrakCare using InterSystems’ Ensemble integration development platform.

As part of the InterSystems contract, the HSSD has already implemented pharmacy stock control from JAC, which had been interfaced to the existing SWIFT PAS.

As part of the go-live, the JAC interfaces have been transferred to the new TrakCare PAS in preparation for comprehensive medicines management capability.

Guernsey has developed a healthcare delivery framework for elective and emergency services using a specially formed group of clinicians, The Medical Specialist Group.

The group accesses all records and appointments via the HSSD. The electronic patient record project will enable all support staff to have the most-up-to date patient information.

HSSD chief officer, David Hughes, said: “The previous system involved too much form filling and letter writing to transfer information around the HSSD and between the MSG and GP surgeries.

“This all took time and could delay the prompt treatment of our patients. As the EHSCR project moves forward, we can look forward to a greatly streamlined approach to patient care.”

Guernsey awarded the ten year contract to InterSystems in July 2007. When the EHSCR is fully rolled out it will be used to support the delivery of comprehensive health and social service to the 62,000 people living in the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Alderney.

Phil Birchall, healthcare business development director at InterSystems, said: “Now that the new PAS, A&E, theatres, child health and pharmacy are all operational, we look forward to completing the roll-out of the entire EHSCR and delivering a truly world class solution for the States of Guernsey.

“This has been a real team effort with excellent collaboration between HSSD, InterSystems, CSE, JAC and also our Guernsey-based partner ITEX, who are delivering hardware and infrastructure services to support the project.”
