Medicines management software specialist JAC has won a contract to provide the latest version of its pharmacy management software to hospitals in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
JAC, a subsidiary of Mediware Information Systems, has been awarded the new contract by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC) of South Africa to implement the new Enterprise Edition of the JAC Pharmacy Management system in care facilities across the region.
The value of the contract, which may cover up to 40 hospitals, was not disclosed.
The agreements cover upgrading the JAC Pharmacy Management system currently in use at the three major academic hospitals in the Cape Town metropolitan. The deal covers the immediate upgrade of three main academic hospitals in the Cape Town metropolitan area to a single JAC Enterprise Edition pharmacy management system.
They also provide for subsequently rolling-out the system to the region’s main public sector hospitals and community health clinics. The full rollout program will support as many as 40 public sector hospitals in the region, in addition to more than a dozen community clinics.
When fully implemented, the system will support healthcare for about 10% of the country’s total population. This integrated approach will provide a major advancement of PGWC’s ability to monitor, control and audit medicines usage on a regional basis.
The new Enterprise Edition of JAC Pharmacy Management is said to enable customers to operate multiple facilities on a single architectural model that shares common high level data – such as patient and drug databases- while still allowing separate tailoring at the individual site level, such as formulary control.

JAC provides medication management solutions internationally for Mediware and has approximately 200 hospital customers in the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa.
