Bosch has launched a new telehealth solution that allows patients suffering from chronic cardiac or pulmonary conditions to be regularly monitored from home.

The Bosch Telehealth Plus system uses measuring instruments which transmit data to a base stand. The stand then transmits the measured values to a server through a telephone line, where the information is then stored and analysed in a secure database.

The system has been developed by combining products from two former US companies Health Hero Network and ViTel Net, which were acquired by the company earlier this year.

Dr Sascha Henke, vice president of marketing and sales at Bosch Healthcare, said: “Intensive care of this kind means that the number of cost-intensive stays in hospital can be reduced, thus achieving a significant improvement in patients’ quality of life.”

According to the company, more than 30,000 patients in the US are already being monitored by Bosch telehealth systems which are being used in collaboration with a number of organisations with proven long-term success.

For example, a partnership study with the US Department of Veterans Affairs at the University of Colorado found that the number of hospital stays for patients with COPD was cut by 20 percent when the Bosch telehealth system was used.

Peter Fouquet, president of Bosch in the UK said: “As a leading technology and services company, we have both knowledge and expertise in the innovation of electronics, sensor technology and system networking. Telehealth, by its very nature, requires this.

“As the number of chronically ill people rises fast, it is vital that healthcare providers continue to invest in remote patient management technologies as part of their long-term treatment strategies.”
