The Digital Health Regional Networks Event programme saw our third event of the series take place, Thursday 23 June, 12:30-14:00, with a focus on content from across the East Midlands, West Midlands and East of England

The Regional Networks Event series is dedicated to NHS IT leaders, focused on sharing digital best practice, latest updates, developments, and implementations underway in a particular region. The benefits to Network Members attending these events is having the opportunity to learn from peers across the region, share their wins, seek out answers, learn from Network Sponsors on their latest products, services and client activity, and network with fellow members.

This programme of events is only open to our Network Members which include, digital health leaders from across the NHS, public sector, charitable sectors, academia, and our Network Sponsors.

The LLR Care Record is part of the national Shared Care Record (ShCR) programme.  This will give health and care professionals directly involved in an individual’s care a more complete view of the care and treatment that they have received across all services.  The region is implementing technology components from the Interweave product set.  This is a set of technical capabilities originally developed for the Yorkshire and Humber Care Record but now being rolled out across other regions.

Hear the local experience of using design thinking methodologies alongside architecture design and solution delivery.  This includes how some of the following approaches have been adopted:

  • Conducting user research with local users to discover and capture pain-points in a structured way
  • Making use of online tools to deal with remote working challenges
  • Applying hypothesis-driven design techniques to help clarify solution proposals
  • Analysing technical gaps and engaging with system suppliers to deliver new features
  • Working with regional and inter-regional standards groups to ensure information consistency

From one of the lowest ever digital maturity ratings, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHT) set a five year plan to reach HIMSS Level 6. Now three years into that journey – and post-pandemic – Mark Hutchinson, Executive Chief Digital and Information Officer will share the implementation of Sunrise EPR is driving huge change.

The basic story is that we went from a small local data sharing project to a full scale system across three ICSs in a fairly short period of time. The 12 weeks refers to an intense period of mobilisation work centred around the Nightingale Hospital programme which gave momentum to push out to more areas

Meet our speakers:

Toby PageToby Page – Architecture Lead, Traverse Digital – providing services on behalf of the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland Shared Care Record.  Toby is currently working alongside health and care organisations in the region to deliver shared care record functionality aligning to local priorities.  He is leading on discovery activities to ensure that challenges in different care settings are well understood and that technical capabilities solve the right problem.  This also includes the design of standards for health and social care information that align to national and regional approaches. In the past he has worked on health and care digital transformation initiatives with NHS trusts and local government in Leeds as well as on the Yorkshire & Humber Care Record.  Toby’s previous experience has also included solution architecture, application development and clinical informatics for EMIS Health.  He has a particular interest in using human-centred design and design-thinking methodologies alongside enterprise architecture practice.

Mark TaylorMark Taylor – IT Program Lead, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust Mark is currently working for the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust as the IT program lead for the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital. In addition, Mark is also deploying an ICS-wide shared care record across the Black Country and West Birmingham ICS.

Mark has nearly 25 years of experience in NHS IT supporting all aspects of the NHS including primary care, community services, mental health, and acute services where Mark was an Assistant Director of IT Services for 10 years.

Mark was working for SWBH when he deployed the Imprivata Single Sign-On solution as part of the Cerner implementation the Trust was undertaking.

James ReedJames Reed – CCIO, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS FT
James Reed is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Chief Clinical Information Officer at Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS FT. He was first appointed as CCIO in 2013 and during this time has overseen a range of digital projects including BSMHFT’s role in the Global Digital Exemplar Programme. He is also clinical lead for the West Midlands Shared Care Record programme. James has been involved in the CCIO network since its inception and has been on the advisory panel for the last 6 years and was elected chair in 2019 and re-elected in 2021.

Simon NoelSimon Noel – CNIO, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
After qualifying in 1986, Simon spent 20 years working in Adult Intensive Care, becoming a Charge Nurse. It was at this time he became involved in digital healthcare when he led the management of an intensive care patient information system. Following this, he worked with Blood Transfusion, to help enhance and deploy a bedside electronic transfusion system. Since 2017, he has been the Chief Nurse Informatics Officer at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with others, leading the development of the digital record system and to reinforce the presence of Nursing as a voice in organisational Digital decision making.

Mark Hutchinson is an experienced NHS Executive CDIO and has appeared in the CIO Top 100. With a proven track record in delivering large scale, complex transformational projects at several acute trusts, he is passionate about using technology to drive change and improve patient safety and care. He currently leads an award winning digital and information team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust.
