This journal club is based on a paper entitled, Prevalence of electronic screening for sepsis in National Health Service acute hospitals in England | BMJ Health & Care Informatics. The authors set out to describe digital sepsis alerts (DSAs) in use in English National Health Service (NHS) acute hospitals. A Freedom of Information request surveyed acute NHS Trusts on their adoption of electronic patient records (EPRs) and DSAs. Not all Trusts were willing or able to provide details of their EPR or the underlying algorithm.

This journal club is based on a paper entitled, ‘Characterising the health and social care segment of the BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT) membership and their continuing professional development needs’. The authors present this paper, thought to be the first to characterise the health and social care membership of an IT focused professional body and to start to determine their CPD needs. This included capturing over 600 unique job titles and exploring movements between roles. The North West Informatics Skills (ISD) Network has been running their Excellence-in-Informatics (workforce) Accreditation scheme for a number of years, 33% of organisations are currently accredited to the level 1 standards.
